Types of Braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are made of high-grade stainless steel. These aren’t the bulky and uncomfortable metal braces of the 1960’s or 70’s that your parents may have had where the entire tooth was covered with metal. They are now smaller and more comfortable than ever. Teeth are straightened by attaching one brace or bracket to each tooth and then connecting all the braces together with a wire known as an archwire. Each time you come in for an appointment, the braces stay on the teeth but the archwire may be changed to a different size as you progress through treatment. You also get to choose different colored elastics each time you come in for an appointment. These elastics hold the archwire in place and they quite literally come in every color of the rainbow. Picking out colors for your braces at each appointment is a great way to show your school spirit or to be festive for whatever holiday might be around the corner.

Ceramic braces or clear braces are made of high strength ceramic materials and they work in the same way metal braces do. They offer a more esthetic option to braces as they are almost completely translucent. Typically, they are used by adults and older teenagers that have cosmetic concerns.

Invisalign- moves teeth through a series of aligners that are virtually invisible. The aligners are custom made to your mouth, and this technology has been developed using computer scanners and a "virtual reality" plan that shows how the teeth will move over the course of treatment into an "ideal" position. Each aligner is custom made for your teeth based on a plan devised by you and Dr. Todd. Many adults find this method of moving teeth to be an alternative to traditional braces, given their virtually transparent/invisible quality. Each set of clear, plastic retainers is switched out about every two weeks. This system can make brushing and flossing easier and does not limit your ability to eat or drink certain foods and fluids. Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces- These type of braces are "invisible" when you smile because they are hidden behind the teeth. By taking an impression of your mouth that is then scanned into a computer, these braces are 100% custom made to the shape of your teeth. They are a great option for professional adults, actors and athletes.
